Inspired by the mid-century modern design seen in Hawaii, Maui designer Ivan Woods created the collection’s timeless profile. Made of solid Oak and hand crafted in Melbourne, Maui’s offset angled lines coupled with elegant proportions give it a timeless aesthetic. Seat and back covers provide a soft landing and the legs and arms are available in timber paints and washes from Schiavello’s ColourLab palette.

To cater to any space, Maui comes in three styles: Maui Standard, Maui Integral and Maui Lounger. Maui Standard comes with the option of either straight arms or no arms and fits gracefully into dining, café and community spaces.

Compared to Maui Standard, the arms of Maui Integral sit flush to a narrower backrest. The more demure shape creates a comfortable chair for dining and café interiors that have limited space.

Maui Lounger is designed to be generous in its dimension, allowing one to retreat, relax and sit in a lounging position. Available with or without arms, Maui Lounger certainly enhances the impression of a calming respite in reception and break out spaces.

In 2011, Australian designer Ivan Woods vacationed in the Hawaiian Islands, particularly spending a lot of time in Maui.

"Staying in a classic Hawaiian beach shack and frequenting the café and bars in the area gave me the opportunity to enjoy the casual, timeless, mid-century ambiance of these spaces and their modest but elegant timber furnishings", he says.

"I wanted to capture and interpret some of the spirit and essence of this experience in the realisation of the Maui collection, as I felt it had a commonality with some of the casual, laid back and free spirited aspects of Australian culture," says Ivan.

From the materials used in the seat, to the shape and finger joints in the arms for improved strength, the Maui collection brings a small piece of the 'Aloha' spirit into day-to-day living spaces.

The late Ivan Woods designed interiors and products for over 30 years. His work drew inspiration from his travels and interior architecture training in Perth, Australia. Working across projects within the UK, US, Germany and Italy, Ivan specialised in hotel and workspace design.

Schiavello and Ivan Woods maintained a solid history together. Our collaborative design process, which evolved over a decade, yielded distinctive collections such as Toro Collection in 2011, Palomino Chair in 2014, and both Kayt Village and Bomba Sofa in 2015.

With a strong architectural sensibility and carefully considered geometry, Ivan enriched his designs' emotional qualities in the fine detailing and sense of place. Ivan explained, "Good design is the creation of spaces, experiences and objects, embedded with strong and dynamic emotional connections to the people that use them. This is done through reflecting a sense of place, with a cultural authenticity and aesthetic.”
