Battle for climate start-ups as Sydney launches new CBD innovation hub

Written by Natasha Gillezeau

Australia will soon be home to one of the world’s most dynamic growth hubs for emerging green technologies

Our NSW Construction team is thrilled to be a construction partner in building a greener future for Australia.

A new shared office space called Greenhouse will open in the Sydney CBD Salesforce tower next year as part of plans to become a hub for climate-related tech start-ups.

The new hub, which will occupy 3800 square metres over the first three floors of Lendlease’s new 56-storey tower at 180 George Street, will offer cost-effective office space that enables emerging companies to prosper and expand into global markets.

Greenhouse, named as a metaphor for growth, is set to open its doors to tenants in early 2022.

The innovation hub is the result of planning negotiation between the City of Sydney council and Lendlease.

City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said creating affordable start-up space would help support an important sector of the economy and contribute to the CBD’s post-pandemic recovery.

Greenhouse is a wonderful opportunity for tech entrepreneurs and the scale-up economy to be located in one of the most advantageous and desirable locations in Australia, and for the City to showcase Sydney’s tech start-up ecosystem to the world, Technology businesses are pivotal to Sydney’s future. They create high-quality jobs, boost the local economy, strengthen our connections around the world and make Sydney a more desirable place to live, work and visit. By supporting our fastest-growing, sustainability-focused businesses with affordable, premium office space and access to expert-run services and globally competitive talent, we hope to reaffirm Sydney’s reputation as a vibrant and sustainable city and the home of smart, inclusive and green innovation.

Greenhouse aims to directly support more than 100 high-performing businesses in creating more than 1500 new jobs over 10 years. It will also engage the wider tech ecosystem, create pathways for early-stage start-ups as well as corporate and university talent and help position Sydney as a global leader in climate tech.

Investible Co-Founder and Greenhouse chief executive Creel Price said Greenhouse businesses will have access to a range of talent and growth services as well as investment opportunities, including the Investible Climate Tech Fund – a new venture capital fund to be launched by Investible this year.

Investible has made more than 90 investments in early stage companies operating in a range of sectors.

Emerging technology companies will play a critical role in enabling a net-zero carbon future, but they face increasingly complex challenges and require different levels of support as they scale. We’re designing a space that’s optimised for growth; bringing together a diverse group of investors, experts, partners and advisers to provide climate tech businesses with the nutrient capital, talent, programs and community to grow to their fullest potential.

Mr Price added that the initial idea for Greenhouse was born from wanting to rethink the traditional co-working model, which often focuses more on how it can keep businesses in as opposed to how it can help them scale and eventually, grow beyond the space.

In terms of physical layout, Greenhouse is hoping to evolve the open plan and fixed office combination that predominates the co-working space sector towards more unique solutions that best maximise flexibility and how tech teams work and grow in a post-pandemic world.
