An urban metropolis office space

An 'urban metropolis' was the inspiration for an office expansion for accounting firm BDO.

BDO is Australia's largest locally owned professional services firm specialising in financial services. A merger with PKF saw an additional 110 staff join BDO's headquarters in Adelaide.

Having previously worked with designer Thomson Rossi on BDO's fitout at 420 King William Street, Schiavello SA was again engaged when the client acquired more space at 422 King William Street.

Workplace design inspired by cafe culture

Taking inspiration from the many ‘hole in the wall’ cafes of Adelaide, the 800sqm space features a centralised social hub or café with exposed building fabric and ‘street theming’ to break down work areas.

Around it, our SA team provided open plan workstations, offices, breakout spaces, partitions, steel mesh curtains, acoustically treated concrete ceilings and a kitchen area.

Providing construction and furniture

Our ability to provide interior construction, workstations and furniture was of significant benefit to BDO.

Keen to maintain continuity with their original space, previously selected furniture and workstations were utilised with subtle changes to embrace the new area.

Transitioning from a traditionally fixed office space was made easier by Schiavello furniture provider Systems. The multipurpose mobile Marina range proved a valuable solution for the changing needs of this dynamic work environment, while the Tom and Alto stools provided a playful addition. Systems storage was implemented for its versatility and Stealth storage tied in perfectly with the open plan.

Value engineering

While achieving exact like-for-like on a reduced budget was challenging, our SA team was able to overcome this with value engineering and by providing a system of similar characteristics.

Upon completion, this engaging workspace had BDO staff eager to relocate to the new premises. Rudy Pieck, Chairman of Partners, BDO Adelaide says, “BDO has been pleased with results of the 422 office construction and fitout by Schiavello; they worked well with our project manager, delivering on time and budget!  It really is a great space. We would recommend their services."
