A quality workplace for one of Australia's most significant charity organisations

Founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS), Reverend John Flynn, once said, “If you start something worthwhile nothing can stop it.” Some 81 years on, his words still ring true as rapid growth led the vital aeromedical charity organisation into larger new premises in Melbourne.

By working closely with employees and connecting with RFDS’ core values, Dasch Associates designed a workplace which prioritises staff health and wellbeing.

The design provides different zones for retreat, collaboration, and focused work. The layout also seizes opportunities to establish interactive intersections and spark spontaneous meetings between staff.

Materials and finishes were selected to reflect remote Australian locations. Raw concrete walls and floors, exposed services, hardwood joinery, landscape-inspired carpets, and upholstery designs by the late Australian Aboriginal artist Minnie Pwerle, all interweave to reference the Australian outback. Sustainable materials were also selected for their recycled or renewable properties.

A team effort

Schiavello Construction VIC worked closely with Dasch Associates to ensure all design aspirations were met within the charity ’s strict budget.

“It was a real team effort. The generosity of Schiavello and the trades; everyone went the extra mile to assist an organisation that truly is an inspiration to our nation,” says Mark Davis, Director of Dasch Associates.

The team delicately mounted a sculptural cardboard installation in the reception area and suspended a fabric cloud from the ceiling, while curved walls were built to display large format graphics. Staff showers, a large breakout area and an audiovisual integrated boardroom were all delivered with textbook execution.

“Schiavello’s team was really easy to work with - flexible and transparent during the contract negotiation period. From the very beginning, we were extremely comfortable with the team, and the project ran absolutely smoothly. We couldn’t have picked a better company to work with.” Sally White, Executive Assistant & Project Manager, Office Relocation, Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria.
