A creative space

The Herald and Weekly Times wanted a classic yet modern and imaginative breakout and entertaining area for their ‘Creative Space’ located in their Southbank workplace.

Encompassing a welcoming reception, energetic work spaces and relaxing dining area, the ‘creative space’ needed to provide both staff and visitors with pockets of space, each with its own unique ambiance. These spaces had to cover a broad range of purposes including entertaining, working, relaxing, reading, and meeting over a coffee or lunch.

Schiavello Construction was responsible for construction management which included installation of seven different floor finishes; carpet, cork, vinyl, rubber etc., and modifying the ceiling by removing and replacing tiles with golden-yellow reflecting lights. The cafe area required mounting ceramic tiles and installation of a display fridge and reheating equipment.

An ode to the company's history

Schiavello Construction also installed pelmet light fittings to draw attention to historic newspaper articles such as clippings of Phar Lap, Australia’s famous racehorse, and the infamous bombing of Darwin. A further ode to the company’s history was created through the use of individual brass letters, restored from old printing press machines, framing the walls.

Managing over seventeen furniture suppliers, Schiavello was also responsible for an extensive joinery package including banquet seating, window pods, black boards, pin boards and a magazine rack.

Fostering a high level of trust

Schiavello Construction took advantage of the three month project lead time to prepare an extensive construction program that ensured the project would meet the client’s high finish expectations and on budget through value engineering, offering insightful alternative finish guidance and implementing cost effective processes.

Further, past experience working with Geyer, paired with consistent project control group meetings, fostered a high level of trust and strong collaboration of ideas that helped Schiavello Construction realise the ambitious vision of the architect without losing the integrity of the design.
