How to improve memory retention in the workplace

Research proves that the way we transition between independent and group work greatly affects our productivity and memory retention. Due to this, the layout of our workspaces and the furniture that populates them affect our memory, and thus performance, much more than is generally anticipated.

When we are talking or brainstorming, our brains can only hold between five and nine items of information at any one time, before we need to disengage from the group and move to independent work. This independent work might be focused solo thinking, reflecting on what was discussed or note taking and allows us to retain the items longer term.

Therefore, being able to effectively switch back and forth between group and individual work without distraction in transition allows employees to take those items
of information and process them alone, creating the greatest level of efficiency in the workplace.

Walking from one area of the office not only takes time – time in which points of discussion and ideas can be forgotten – but also gives the opportunity for distraction in the form of running into someone, a phone call, checking Facebook or thinking about other things you need to do.

The Agile Table allows for seamless
flows back and forth from collaboration to independent work without needing to move about the office, allowing employees to get the most out of every interaction. Sit at the Storming Table (the highest point of the Agile Table) for a group meeting. Flesh out ideas using the Agile Power Totem with a screen for the ultimate interactivity and effortless power and data access. Brainstorm for 30 minutes and then step away from the group, taking your ideas to the Work Table (the lower end of the Agile Table) for quiet processing and action taking.

Today’s open plan workplace aims to support and promote interaction and collaboration, however the need for areas that support independent work is also essential for teams to be successful. Agile Table embraces and enhances both of these different modes of working and, with its length and varying heights, enables teams to alternate from group collaboration to independent work seamlessly while negating distraction – resulting in maximum productivity and memory retention within the workspace.

Complement flexible working with audiovisual capabilities. The Agile Power Totem brings integrated power, data and an optional screen to the tabletop, adding new levels of interactivity and connectivity to employee meetings.
