Prior to 2000, executive and middle-management office chairs commonly featured solid backs that could recline but offered no flex. These chairs were not only uncomfortable but also unfavourable in an ergonomic sense. In response, Tony Schiavello started working with a design that featured a flex mechanism halfway down the backrest, a movement that allowed the chair back much more flexibility than had been seen before. This base was used to develop Uniflex, which Tony also made specialty arms for. Pioneering the spring-driven flex design, Uniflex became one of the first flexible chairs of its kind in Australia.
